Cheap Fun with the Atlanta Thrashers

It had been a while since I’d been to a hockey game. Decided it was time to take in a Thrashers game at Philips Arena. Got a couple of $10 seats way up in the nosebleed section. Surprisingly, the view wasn’t bad at all. Hey, at least we could see the puck flying around, so I can’t complain.

Frankly, it would have been more fun if the Thrashers didn’t get shut out by Toronto.

At least there was sumo hockey!

Go Scarlet Knights!

football, georgia tech, sports — Tags: , , — boredandblogging @ 7:13 am

Rutgers beat a very good Louisville team Thursday night, 28-25. The Rutgers D shut out the Cardinals explosive offense in the second half. Rutgers doesn’t have a realistic shot of making it to the national championship game since they haven’t played a tough schedule, but they have a chance to go to a big money bowl game if they end the season undefeated.

Rutgers has an interesting history. They played in the first collegiate football game. They haven’t beaten a ranked team since 1988 and have never beaten a team as highly ranked as Louisville.

And James Gandolfini is their most famous alum. What else do you need to know anyway?

There is a good chance that Rutgers and Georgia Tech, my alma mater, could meet in the Orange Bowl. Honestly, I’m not wild about that. Rutgers is the feel-good story of the year (deservedly) and everyone would be rooting for them against Tech. Not kosher.

Still, its hard not to be impressed by the Scarlet Knights players tonight.

FIFA wants RFID in Balls

sports — boredandblogging @ 8:58 pm

According to USA Today, FIFA wants to put RFID chips in soccer balls, so refs can tell if the ball actually crossed the goal line. Apparently, they are waiting to make sure it works perfectly before officially using them.

This doesn’t seem like that bad of an idea. I guess arguing whether it was really a goal or not is half the fun, but at least the refs would get it right. It can be done in football as well. Put the chips at the ends of the ball to see if it crossed the goal line. Maybe put the chips in the thigh guards of players to know if they were down when the ball crossed the line.

Its probably not a cheap solution, but its fair.

Damn Scoop Jackson and MJ!

basketball, sports — boredandblogging @ 12:35 am

Scoop Jackson has a great article on Kobe and game 7 over at ESPN. I think Scoop hits it right on the head. Basically Jordan screwed Kobe by simply existing.

And if you want to see Kobe’s reaction to Barkley calling him a pansy, watch the YouTube video here.
